My work explores the effects media representation or lack thereof, can have, specifically focusing on Black women. Each piece focuses on one aspect of representation, for example, over-sexualization of Black women, Black women's hair, and historical practices of blackface in theater. Lack of representation has deeply affected me as a Black woman who’s attended a predominantly white school throughout my life. I wanted to capture the feelings of self-hatred, confusion, and anger I often felt, but also contrast the negative emotions with examples of positive representation that I wish I had.
