In my art I capture the beauty of the underwater world. My artwork draws inspiration from a number of real organisms that I have learned about in my scientific study of marine ecosystems. For example, each of the screen printed fish are outlines of real species (from top to bottom Atlantic silverside, striped bass, banded killifish). I use bright colors and patterns to highlight the diversity that exists in these ecosystems that you do not typically get to see. I also have a number of art pieces that are not about the ocean. In those art pieces I try to focus on using color and texture to create movement through the piece. Additionally, I try to use a variety of materials to create my artwork. I have taken mixed media three years in a row and every year I have figured out more ways I can blend different materials together to create a unique texture. Some of my favorite materials are tissue paper, textured cloths, and paper pulp which is used to create sculptures. This year, I have focused on developing my favorite skills, like screenprinting, as well as going outside my comfort zone and trying new things, like stamps and natural materials. Through this exploration I am able to use my imagination on every piece and create art without limiting myself.
